The MSLR is open on all Sundays and Bank Holidays from May 28 until August 20. Additionally there are some operating days outside the main season (see below).
Trains on operating days will be steam hauled unless stated otherwise. Our museum, shop and refreshment room will be open on these days along with our real ale bar, the Kitchener Arms.
Opening times are 11am – 5pm. Trains typically run every 20 minutes on operating days, though this may vary for some special events.
April 30 / May 1: Middy in the War Years – Our popular take on an event seen at many heritage railways across the country. Come and see displays, memorabilia, weapons and vehicles from the time of the Second World War. Reenactors will add to the atmosphere of a country railway station during the war at a time when lines like the ‘Middy’ were vital for serving nearby airfields and helping the public go about their everyday life as normally as they could. Visit this event’s dedicated website www.middyatwar.co.uk for more details. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults, £8 for concessions, £5 for children and £25 for families.
September 9/10: Steam Gala – One of the highlights of our calendar with all our engines in steam running to a special timetable for an intensive day of operations. Passenger and demonstration goods trains will be working up and down the line and there will be a variety of other attractions, including road engines, spread around Brockford station. More details and ticket prices will be released in 2017.
Other Operating Day Events
April 16/17: Easter Steam-up – The Middy starts its 2016 steaming season with an Easter-themed event including an Easter egg hunt for the children, and rides on our trains pulled by three of our resident steam engines running to a special timetable. Our bar coach will also be open with a selection of real ales as well as a range of other beverages.
June 18: Continental Day – Experience our resident Cockerill 0-4-0VBWT tram engine, built in Belgium in steam along with another locomotive from the Middy’s growing collection of resident engines. A number of continental beers will be available in the bar coach and the food will add to the European theme!
August 6: Hornby Collectors – When we think of model railways, one name will inevitably spring to mind; Hornby. As a tribute to Frank Hornby our popular Hornby collectors day returns once again with a chance to see carefully crafted and intricate model railway layouts displayed around the museum.
December 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th & 17th: Santa Specials* – Come and bring the kids along to meet Santa and his elves at his railway home this Christmas. You’ll take the train pulled by steam to the North Pole Halt where your child will receive a personalised gift from the big man himself. These events are very popular with many visitors returning year after year
*Please note that due to the nature of these events, tickets must be pre-booked in advance. Bookings will open on August 1st 2017 when we will post further details on how to book your tickets.
