Discover the Legacy of Mendlesham Airfield at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum is proud to host the Mendlesham Airfield Association (MAA) Exhibition, a unique tribute to the USAAF 34th Bomb Group and the vital role Mendlesham Airfield played in World War II.
A Story of Bravery, Sacrifice, and History
During the Second World War, Mendlesham Airfield was home to the 34th Bomb Group, a key unit in the strategic bombing campaign over Nazi-occupied Europe. With the arrival of the 34th Bomb Group, the Middy became part of Mendlesham’s war effort. While originally built for the rural farming community it became a vital transport link, delivering fuel, bombs and supplies to RAF Mendlesham, as well as being an essential transport hub for the thousands of service personnel stationed in Mendlesham.
The MAA Exhibition brings this history to life through photographs, personal accounts, artefacts, and interactive displays, preserving the legacy of the airmen who served here and the community that supported them.
Located within the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore Suffolk’s wartime heritage in a setting that blends aviation and railway history — two crucial elements of Britain’s wartime infrastructure.
