The MSLR’s new restoration engine shed funded by the National Lottery will be formally opened in May this year, in advance of the main summer programme. The external building is already complete and internal fitting out is advanced enough for work to be recommenced on the Middy’s own locomotive, Hudswell, Clarke 0-6-0T no. 1604. The new shed will provide a centre for engineering expertise for older volunteers to exercise their skills on major steam railway projects, also for younger visitors to see how railway vehicles are maintained.
The design and style of the building is loosely based on the original loco shed at Laxfield, which was the only such facility on the Mid Suffolk Light Railway.
