154-year-old G.E.R. 1st class smoking coach returns to service
After 65 years the Mid Suffolk Light Railway will be able to run three coach trains again since the railway closed in 1952. After many years work the team at the Middy’s restoration works have completed the task of bringing another Victorian vehicle back into service. G.E.R. no. 140 is a real time capsule in itself as the accommodation is laid out in the form of lounges in a gentleman’s club and the purpose, of course, was for smoking whilst travelling, perhaps, to the races at Newmarket or some such. Needless to say smoking is no longer permitted, but visitors to the Middy can experience travelling in Victorian style.
The Middy was also the last British public railway to use 6 wheel coaches in general service, but now our train is composed entirely of genuine Victorian four wheel coaches all well over 100 years old.
