Middy launches New Carriage Shed Appeal

Our unique Victorian 4-wheeled coaches need protection.
Since 2002 the Middy has been operating historic steam trains with genuine Victorian rolling stock to give our visitors, as closely as possible, the experience of train travel in a bygone age.

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway’s three Victorian coaches, are all well over 100 years old and the oldest, no.140 at 162 years, is thought to be the oldest Great Eastern vehicle in regular use. All three are of mainly wooden construction and suffer constant damage from being stored in the open.

Our next major project is to open second siding at Dovebrook and build a Carriage Shed over both lines to protect the carriages and some of our other wagons, including the oldest known horse box G.E. no.180 of 1869. Estimated cost at today’s prices £100.000.00.

With no protection the Middy has to expend serious time and money to keep these vehicles in operational condition, which is a considerable strain on the railway’s finances.
