“One small step for man, but a giant leap for the Middy”
Paraphrasing Neil Armstrong’s famous quote was how Middy 1604 Restoration Project Manager Steve Grayston summed up the historic moment at Brockford today when the loco’s boiler and chassis were at last reunited after 15 years. “They said it couldn’t be done but we are well on the way to proving them wrong,” Steve went on, obviously proud of the team’s achievement.
As the pictures show there is still a lot to be done, but the target of having 1604 steaming for the 2024 season is clearly achievable. And what a difference it will make to the railway’s finances considering the increasing costs for hiring in steam locomotives and their transport to and from mid Suffolk .
